What Are Impulse Responses?

Impulse Responses (IRs) are digital audio files that capture real-world equipment to be used “in the box”. In guitar recording, IRs specifically capture the tonal fingerprint of a physical guitar cabinet, microphone, mic position, and room interaction.

When you load an IR into an amp simulator, modeler, or IR loader plugin, your guitar signal is processed as if it were played through that exact cabinet and microphone signal chain.

Impulse response files allow you flexibility and advantages over traditional recording techniques:

  • Record silently or at low volume
  • Avoid mic placement and room acoustics issues
  • Instantly switch between different cabinets and mic combinations
  • Achieve consistent, repeatable tones across sessions

In practical terms, IRs replace the need to mic a real cabinet while preserving the sonic character of a real speaker and microphone chain. This makes them ideal for home studios, professional mixing environments, touring rigs, and re-amping workflows.
