The angle of the microphone in relation to the speaker has an effect on the tone. As the angle increases the result is a roll off of the high frequencies. This is called “off-axis coloration”. The coloration can be useful in taming harshness or getting a warmer tone. However, phase issues can be introduced, especially if using multiple mics on the same source.
